I took my cat in for her rabies shot on Wednesday. I really didn’t think anything about it cause its a routine shot.
I brought her in, they gave her the shot and we left. About a half hour later, she started to cry… then she started to vomit. After she threw up 3 more times, I brought her back to the vet.
They gave her some fluids and a shot of antihistamine and told me she should be fine.
When we got home, she seemed to be back to normal – I’m attributing that to the fluids. She ate a little bit and drank a ton of water.
Then about an hour later she started to cry again. She started looking for a corner but didnt make it and vomited all over the floor. I ran to her and she went into my closet where she projectiled all over my hand.
It was late by now so I couldnt bring her back to the Vet. I watched her all night and made sure she was doing ok. When I woke up the next day, she seemed better.
I gave her a little bit of soft food and thought we were out of the woods.
Nope.
She again started to throw up so I rushed her back to the Vet.
They put us in our own room and we waited. And waited and waited. We waited for a freakin hour! I dont know who your Vet is… but Banfield – the one’s at all the Pet Smarts – stink with having you wait. I mean an hour wait for a sick cat??
Anyway, when they finally came to us, the Dr. (very nice and apologetic by the way) looked over my cat’s files and told me to NEVER give her another vaccination again. If she reacted to the rabies shot the next reaction could be worse.
They gave her more fluids, medication and some special food and after a couple days she was much better. She is attacking my feet as I write.
Has this ever happened to anyone?
Is this bad that I can’t get her vaccinated again?

Same thing happened to our cat. We took him to the vet today, he got his rabies shot (distemper shot too), and claws trimmed. The vet noticed a cut near his mouth, so she also prescribed him some antibiotics. We got home, gave him his antibiotics, and he just started throwing up every where after about 15 mins. He had blood in his vomit, blood in his stool, he was crying, he wouldn’t move much, and he kept smacking his mouth. I got my stethoscope out and listened to his heart and it was going full throttle so I took him to a 24 hour pet ER clinic. They tried to do vitals on him and I’ve never heard a cat scream so loud in my entire life. Anyhow, the doctor prescribed him metronidazole. He’s not drinking any water tonight, I hope he gets better tomorrow.
P.S. That was Banfield as well…maybe theres something wrong with the vaccine they are using?
Wow…that is weird. Where are you located? Just curious?
I didn’t mention that my cat was so thirsty that she was running to the kitchen sink and trying to get water from that – she was so dehydrated.
Please let me know how your cat is doing.
i took my cat in for a distemper and rabies shot yesterday.
They also gave him a dewormer. well…. he starting throwing up like crazy today!!!! once around noon, and about 3 more!!!!
mine was done at banfield as well! i don;t know if this is something i should be expecting or they just have some funky vaccines!!
Hey! We just got back from Banfield, and our cat was acting the same way! vomiting all over the place. we go back to them and pay $40 to see the vet, then they want to do a blood test and give him antihistamines (for $350) but before we have time to make up our minds, they say, well we can’t do it anyway because we’re closing now (THANKS FOR THE $40! SUCKERS!).
Oh my gosh. My cat just had her distemper and rabies shots last Wednesday (5 days ago). She has been vomiting like crazy. She has NEVER reacted to her shots like this. I phoned the vet and it took them 4 hours to return my call. When they phoned back the person on the phone (not the Vet) told me that something else is going on that it is not the shots and that I need to bring her in. The problem that I have is that I have always gotten the mobile unit to come to the house to give her the exam because she WILL NOT get into her carrier. She runs under the bed. I don’t know if I should wait another day or what??? I’m sure that it is the shots.
I would take her right away – definitely! It has to be a reaction to the shots.
