Retarded MacGyver

So, my laptop was broken. The replacement is coming in a couple of weeks but I had to keep working.

What’s a guy to do?

I used the small amount of brain cells I have left and created a fix-it solution.

Ingredients:
String, Large 2″ Binder Clip, closed window blinds so no one sees what you’re doing.

I love Dell

Yesterday, I posted that the screen on my laptop was loose and wrote about how to fix it.

I wish that was my only problem.

This morning, I opened up the lid and heard a crack, looked down and saw a bunch of little pieces on the ground. I let go of the lid and it fell flat to the ground.

The hinges broke – on both sides.

I have no idea how this happened but it kind of made sense since every time I opened it for the past week or so, I kept hearing a crackling noise.

I called Dell and told them what happened. Luckily, my warranty is still good and since I bought this through my old work, I have Gold Technical support.

How to repair a loose laptop screen

For the past couple of weeks, the screen on my laptop has become increasingly looser and looser (kinda like one of my ex-girlfriends, but I digress) and I’ve been too lazy too find out how to fix it.

Well, today, I put it down and the screen fell flat backwards. So I had no choice but to finally fix it.

It’s pretty easy and if I knew how easy it was, I wouldn’t have waited.

I’m working on a Dell Latitude D820 but this should be pretty universal.

If you look at the screen casing, you’ll see some rubber stoppers (I don’t know what they are called) but I have 6 all around the outer edge. Peel those off (you won’t hurt them) and you’ll see a screw. Most likely they will be loose. Take a phillips head and tighten them down.

I also have 2 flat black sticky things (again, no idea what they are called). Take your fingernail or a really small knife and peel those off. You’ll see another set of screws that need to be tightened.

Put the stoppers and sticky things (I’m very technical on this site!) back and your screen should be as good as new.

CPM = I'm an idiot

Idiot face Here’s another example of how much of an idiot I am: I just found out (or maybe that’s realized) what CPM means. Cost per 1000 impressions. So, for every 1000 views of your website, you get paid.

If you have the traffic of Yahoo, YouTube or MySpace this makes perfect sense. For people like me who still have a relatively small audience, this is bordering on stupidity.

How did I finally find this out? I logged onto Adbrite wondering why I had only made .11 cents in 2 months. Then I saw it: CPM.

I was using Adbrite just on CatPuppy and that’s only on the single post portion (as I wrote here) but still, .11 cents?? I had almost 400 visitors in the past month!

Why would anyone want to waste valuable space on their site using this type of ad?

Shifting ads units around

If you haven’t noticed, I changed some of the ad placements on this site – more so on UltimateRedskins.

I tried to change them around on CatPuppy but I’m not quite sure what I’m going to do with that site adwise. I’ll address that in a later post.

I found some great info on ad placements and decided to move things around. I havent been making a lot of money from my sites (I’m cool with that, it’s just frustrating hearing about the amount of money I could be making if you have the proper placements) so doing this was a no brainer. Google has a nice page about where the best placements are. Problogger has one also.

Tension Headaches suck (Updated)

I’ve had this freakin’ headache since Saturday – 6 days!

I went out on Friday night and drank…so I originally thought it was a small hangover (I never get hangover’s – I know, I’m blessed) but when it went into the evening, I got suspicious. I had already taken some Motrin but obviously that didn’t help. So, I popped some Tylenol.

Nothing.

I bought some Excedrin and started popping them. Still nothing. I’m still in pain and now it’s Monday. Tuesday, I go out and buy Excedrin Tension. Again, nothing! still don’t know what the deal is… I just want it gone so I decide to log onto Google to do some self-research.

Apparently I had a brain tumor. (more…)
